  1. Import your video (command I) and insert it into video track 1
  2. Go to your effects palette – video generators – and create a color matte place it in video 3 and then double click on it in the timeline to load it in the viewer
  3. In the viewer click on the controls tab and select a color for the matte behind your text.
  4. Click on the motion tab in the viewer then click the little arrow next to crop – crop both the top and bottom to the size you need (I used 72 on the top 10 on the bottom)
  5. Go back to your effects palette – video generators – and drag a custom gradient into video 2 double click it in the timeline to load it in the viewer, click on the controls tab and setup your gradient the way you want. Realize that the matte that you created in step to will play though the white areas of this gradient.
  6. Now control click on your color matte in video 3 in the contextual menu choose Composite Mode Travel matte luma. This creates a Luma matte with the gradient in video 2
  7. Now double click on the color matte in video 3 and click on the motion tab in the viewer I think it looks better if you lower the opacity
  8. Now create some text and place it in video 4. You now have a lower third with a nice easy to create matte under it.
