- Create a new image in Photoshop the size you want it. (I used 800 x 800)
- Find the center of the document (Go to the View Menu -> New Guide put a guide at 50% vertical, you will have to do this again to put a guide at 50% horizontal)
- Using your ellipse tool with Paths selected not Shape Layers draw a circle from the center hold down alt and shift (This will be the outside of your gear)
- Now again from the center use your Rectangle tool this time only hold alt draw a rectangle a little taller then your circle this will be a tooth on the gear.
- Using your path selection tool select the rectangle you just created
- Go to your actions palette and click create new action give it a name.
- Hit control C then Control V (This copied and pasted your rectangle)
- Hit control T to transform the angle of you rectangle ( I entered 20 degrees)
- Hit enter twice once to accept the degree value one to accept the transformation
- Stop recording your action
- Click the play button in your actions palette until you have rectangles all around your circle.
- Next select all the paths you have created and click your subtract from shape area button and then click combine.
- Next draw a small circle on the inside of your gear using your ellipse toll and holding down alt and shift.
- Next using your Path selection tool select both paths click on exclude overlapping shape areas and click combine.
- Next click on new layer in your layers palette we will working on coloring the gear.
- Next in this new layer create yourself a gradient I used a horizontal gradient from black to grey.
- Next add the filter “Add Noise” set it to monochromatic and increase the amount I used 40
- Next add the filter “Motion Blur” adjust the values I used 35 for angle and 135 for distance.
- Next go to you paths palette and click load path as selection.
- Go back to your layers palette and make sure your gradient layer is selected and hit control J
- Delete your original gradient layer.
- Add bevel and emboss to your gear layer.
- Next hold down alt and click your up arrow you now have a 3d gear.
- Dress it up how you would like and enjoy.
